I've been training with Sifu Kin Sze for years now, at both locations. Recently, I had the unfortunate experience of having had to apply my training to deescalate a threatening situation and emerge unharmed. Without the footwork and foundations I've built at Bamboo Kung Fu, it may have ended terribly.
I have studied in a few different schools, under various techers, but none has ever come close to sifu! The class here is real friendly, and really a great training and learning environment. I love it here!
I began training with Sifu Kin Sze in the Summer of 2012. With no prior experience in martial arts training, aside for a 2 year stint with an american-style boxing club, I was eager for the growth potential that Kung fu could provide. For years, I had been interested in the skill development and physical conditioning , along with the philosophy and history behind this ancient art. I've always considered myself an active person, from boxing, to weight training, swimming, and various sports, I found the first few classes challenging. My flexibility and range of motion was alot tighter than I had realized, and learning the finesses of the footwork and body mechanics was challenging, even for a trained boxer. Sifu stressed that without proper body conditioning and flexibility exercises, I couldn't tap in to the potential of my bodys strength, and thus the Kung fu technique would be difficult to learn. Each and every 90 minutes class, proper form was stressed beyond all else, and repetition (hundreds of punches, kicks, swings, twists, etc) was the key to conditioning and teaching the body a new, more agile and powerful way to move. I've always had no problem with discipline, learned from my boxing days, so I kept at it. Weeks went by, then months. I generally attended two classes a week, which wasn't bad for conditioning, but I realized that if you wanted faster results, you needed to invest more time into it! So, I upped the classes to 3, sometimes 4 sessions a week. It was working, and my agility and flexibility was reaching where it had never been before. What kept me coming back was the physical challenges, Sifu's passion for teaching, and the Bamboo community. On my off days, I usually took up weight lifting, as prior to combat training, I enjoyed strength training at the gym. I was never really able to hit the high gains, to that of body builders or power lifters, because whenever I attempted to lift really heavy, it would result in injury. During the years prior to Kung Fu, I've sustained a rotator cuff injury from a military press, a neck strain from a dead lift, blown out hamstrings (actually, this was from over-training as a boxer), and a wrist injury from the chest press. It was demoralizing. I'd hit a higher weight than before, and it resulted in a visit to the physiotherapist, and to some much loathed time off from the gym. I suppose the only plus to these injuries is I learned more about how the body worked, and realized there was more to the body than the bigger muscles that you can see in the mirror. Training with Sifu (and the rest of Bamboo Kung Fu) has made me realize that the body is one machine, and must be trained as a whole, not in parts, it order to maximize it's true potential. Sifu was very knowledgeable of body mechanics, and how the body was designed to move, able to relate certain movements to that of natural physics we see everyday. For example, how the punch, with the power generating from the foot and hip (not the shoulder) and how it moved when extending the arm, like a cork-screw or drill bit. What a difference to the speed and power of the punch! I still weight lift, and am I actually planning on incorporating some power lifting this winter into my weight training. Since beginning my practice with Bamboo, not only have I been making gains in strength with heavier weights in key compound exercises (such as dead-lifts, presses, rows as well as body weight exercises) I have been injury free for an entire year (aside from a few jammed fingers from sparring!), which is, obviously, great news for me. If you're looking to learn about your body mechanics, become stronger from head-to-toe, and learn a skill-set that is both practical, and inspiring, check out Bamboo.
