I had a great experience dining here! The service was amazing, attentive, friendly, and made the whole meal enjoyable. The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor, clearly made with quality ingredients. The only thing I would have liked is slightly larger portion sizes, but everything was so delicious that it’s hard to complain. Overall, a wonderful spot that I’d definitely visit again!
A cozy hidden gem for tea lovers in Scarborough My friend Katie and I stopped by Gerhard Café as part of our afternoon tea adventures around Ontario, and what a lovely surprise this place turned out to be! It’s a cozy, tucked-away spot in Scarborough that I didn’t even know was there. The finger sandwiches and petit fours were delicious, and the scones were soft and buttery — just right. They also have a tempting display of small desserts you can take home. Such a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere — definitely one we’ll remember!
I was passing through the area and stopped by this place for a visit. This looked like a nice place for lunch and was clean. I ordered the Chicken sandwich on a Croissant for $15 and was looking forward to something filling. When I got the sandwich, I was stunned. While the presentation was great, there was a tiny amount of chicken on the sandwich and most of it was practically empty. I think there was literally a tablespoon worth of meat on it. $17 after taxes later I was starving and ended up going to the mall to get a chicken wrap that was $5 cheaper with 3x the meat. I even commented to the lady that there was hardly any meat and she didn't seem to care. My mistake was not checking the reviews of this place before coming in. Apparently, tiny portions are the norm leaving people hungry. Folks, save yourself a trip if you want a sandwich and are hungry. You will be out of pocket $17+ and be starving.
We dropped in around 1:30. The place was empty. The decor has a quaint, dated grandmother’s house feel to it. The lady working there was very friendly. We ordered the quiche and soup. There was a vegetarian and regular quiche option. I think it was $11.95. I do think crackers should come with the soup. The food tasted good. The lady working there, looks like she’s working alone. I do think that if you order food and someone comes in to get pastries then she gets busy with them and you have a longer wait for your food. We then bought 2 date squares and 2 sugar free apple strudels. The strudels were $6 each and date squares $6.55 each. I don’t like that some of the pastries didn’t have a description card and there were no prices. There should be cards with descriptions and prices. Or a menu board on the wall with the prices. Plus the receipt just had the total and no itemized list of the stuff ordered. There were some ladies coming in to do high tea. This is a place geared more toward women get togethers. My hubby was still hungry after he ate. I might return in the future for the takeout pasteries.
I previously posted a negative review, i have since deleted it. I think the reason why it didn't taste very good was because i didn't chill the cake in the fridge long enough, I just ate some left overs that i kept in the fridge over the weekend and it tasted much better compared to when i just bought it. I apologize for the review i wrote on impulse.
This place has been around for a long time. I remember coming here when I was in high school, around 30 years ago. In October we forgot to order a cake for my mother's birthday and looked around for a place nearby. We actually had no idea how the cake would be, but to our surprise our picky mother loved it. We got the Black Forest cake and it was absolutely delicious. We loved everything about it. A month later was my sister's birthday so we got a different cake from there (see photo). Once again it was delicious. Not too sweet like supermarket cakes but with the right sweetness. Cakes these days are mostly made of cream but these cakes have the right amount of cream and sponge. It's now our go to place for birthday cakes. I'd like to sit down in the cafe one day for tea/coffee and dessert. The staff were very friendly and even though I came a bit earlier than the promised time, it was already ready for me. The pickup process was really smooth. (We ordered online). Update Nov. 29, 2025. I ordered my sister's birthday cake here and since I originally planned to take the bus to get it I asked on the order form online to provide a perfect fitting paper bag which I can carry easily. Well, stupid me, the cake comes in a fancy box with a clear window on top which is visible when you lift up the handles so you can carry the box. The best cake box I have ever seen from a bakery selling cakes. The only thing about this box is that the sides don't open up so it was kinda tricky to slide out the cake without any of the decoration getting caught and falling off. Not a big deal though. We loved the cake and intend on trying other ones for the next family birthday we celebrate.
I ordered a cake for my husband's 50th and it was just amazing, elegant and delicious. They did a great job. Staff were very patient. Thanks so much Heather for making this cake just the way I wanted. I highly recommend Gerhard's and I will never think twice to go back to them. Love their creativity!!!
